Krannert's "ARCC" (Academic and Research Computing Cloud) provides some of the fastest network and virtual storage options available at Purdue.
U:\
By default, all Faculty, PhD and Staff members are provided 100GB of network storage via "the U drive".
V:\Groups\
For sharing storage between users, a folder can requested in V:\Groups.
Backups -
All Krannert shared network storage has three levels of backup, 4 full backup points every day for 32 days, 4 snapshots per day, as well a daily backup of the whole virtual server that house the storage.
We like backups. You should always have a backup. Save often.
Virtual Machine Storage -
While the U:/V: drives are a a convenient place to house both administrative and research work, Virtual Machines can be outfitted with local storage from either our Hybrid or Solid State storage areas. Hybrid is great for most cases, but large flat files and database manipulations may be improved with the <1ms latencies of our all-solid state storage volumes.
*For the geeks - All Krannert shared Network Storage is housed on our "Hybrid" storage volumes, offering NVME cached, SSD/HDD tiered storage. These spaces are appropriate for the vast majority of academic and research needs. While technically slower than our all-solid state volumes, our definition of "slower" is everyone else's definition of "fast". Meanwhile, our all-solid state volumes are triple-mirrored NVME/SSD and capable of sustaining millions of IOps with <1ms latency for heavy read/write loads.
Bulk Storage / Archival -
Krannert does not currently provide bulk storage options (cheap, multi-terabyte volumes). However, talk to us, if we don't have a solution that meets your needs, we can point you to other campus resources that may do the job.
